The Environment and its Dangers
The Commonwealth Wastelands are filled with many hazards that could be dangerous to your health, physical body and even life. It is a good idea to familiarize these dangers to prevent as many of these hazards as possible. This section will discuss three categories to pay the most attention to; weather and environment, wildlife and food. Due to the numerous ways to obtain radiation in your body, it is always a good idea to get regular checkups with your local medics. If no medics are available in your area, it is recommend to keep a good supply of RadAway. The first signs that your body has obtained too much radiation is by the loss of hair, flaking of skin and a raspy voice.
Weather and Environment
Since the great war and the falling of the bombs, the Boston Commonwealth has had high amounts of radiation in the earth, water and air. Radiation can not only make you sick, but it can also cause death or worse, mutation. Some areas of the wasteland have higher concentrations of radiation. Usually you can spot these areas by the yellowish hue radiating off the ground and in the air. These area tend to be closer to spots where the bombs fell. It is highly recommended that all humans avoid swimming in lakes, streams, oceans, puddles and even pools. This will prevent the radiation in the water from seeping into your skin. Radiation in the air seems to be minimal in most places, however, radiated storms from the south may pass by every now and then. It is recommended that you stay inside during these storms to minimize the radiation entering your body during these storms.
Wildlife
After the bombs fell during the great war, many of the wildlife creatures either died or mutated to survive. Many of these mutated creatures have become extremely aggressive and dangerous. Not all of the wildlife is dangerous but when in the wastelands it is always a good idea to be aware of the creatures you could run into. This is a small list of the most common wildlife creatures in the wasteland from least dangerous to most dangerous.
- Brahmin (Mutated cow/bull)
- Radstag (Mutated deer)
- Radroach (Mutated cockroach)
- Bloatfly (Mutated housefly)
- Molerats
- Bloodbug (Mutated mosquito)
- Stingwing (Part fly and part scorpion)
- Mongrel
- Radscorpion (Mutated scorpion)
- Mutant hounds
- Mirelurk (Mutated shellfish)
- Feral Ghouls (Mutated human)
- Yao Guai (Mutated bear)
- Deathclaw (Mutated Jackson's Chameleon)
Food
The best source of food is the food grown by your local settlement. Sadly, due to the radiation in the earth, art and water, most plants life is also full of radiation. Though the concentration of this radiation in farmed food is low, over time it can become very deadly. The best way to help remove some of this radiation is by cooking the food before eating it. This technique should also be used when eating any sort of meat including and not limited to Bloatfly, Radstag, Molerat, human and sea creatures. If you are wondering the wasteland and find yourself out of food, searching old houses and ruins is always a good way to find nonperishable food from before the great war. Be warned, that this food is often contaminated with more radiation that freshly grown foods.
